Getting in, staying in and getting on

The Government has now issued a response to the consultation on the Sayce Review.

The Sayce Review, Getting in, staying in and getting on published on 9 June 2011, focused on the skills needs and practical help required for a disabled person to start or continue work. It also examined what was required to employ a disabled person, including the discrimination many disabled people still experience in seeking work.

Since September 2014, under the Children and Families Act, the Government has changed the law on special educational needs and disability (SEND) support

Closing the disability skills gap: ‘what works’ to enhance skills for future work

This summary is based on two Disability Rights UK reports: a literature review, by Dr Gill O’Toole of London Metropolitan University, and a reflective report setting a path for future policy.

They focus both on the skills young disabled people need to get into employment; and on skills for people who acquire impairments or conditions during working life.

Planned Government cuts to the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) will go ahead in 2016/17 with some minor changes.

Proposed changes to DSA were postponed pending the outcome of a consultation.

Disability Rights UK responded to the consultation and now the Government has published its response.

The Disability and Skills Unit is dedicated to supporting disabled people to pursue their goals, ambitions and aspirations for work, education and skills development.
